Did you know that Dr. Florence Rena Sabin (1871-1953) was the first full-time female professor at a medical school? Born in Central City, Sabin taught at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, then became head of the department of cellular studies at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Sabin returned to Denver to help reform Colorado’s public health laws, which were called the “Sabin Health Laws.” Denver’s Sabin Elementary School in the Bear Valley neighborhood is named after Dr. Florence Sabin and her sister, Mary, who taught mathematics at East High School and is a founder of the Colorado Mountain Club.
