A very spooky place...Established in 1876, the year Colorado became a state, Riverside Cemetery is Denver’s oldest surviving cemetery – and perhaps the creepiest too! In 1859, a hill on the east side of the aspiring city was designated to be Mount Prospect Cemetery. By 1893, however, residents of the growing city were eyeing the area for other uses, and Mount Prospect was reimagined as Cheesman Park and the Denver Botanic Gardens. Those buried at the city’s original cemetery were moved to the new burial ground at Riverside, a beautifully landscaped park where both mourners and tombstone tourists were welcome – and still are.
